sunday doodles

I just love adding to this handmade journal
on Sunday mornings!
I used Arches Text Wove and it's a dream to work with.
Both for bookbinding and for the artwork.

For this one I thought it needed a little something more than
the text, so I drew a fountain.
It has no real relevance, but I like how it looks.

sunday doodles

I brought my waterbrush to church with
me and had some fun at the bottom
of the page.

Hope you had a wonderful weekend!

sunday doodles

Sometimes I get a little obsessed
with an image.
Can you guess what my current obsession is?

It's feathers.
And I had so much fun adding this one to my
church sketchbook!

I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving
full of food, family and friends
(and thankful-ness, of course).

sunday doodles

When I made this journal
at Calligraphy Northwest last June,
we started with some blank sheets
of Arches text wove and added some gestural marks
to give some texture to otherwise blank pages.
This page had some nice dark spaces
to play off of.

Our pastor has taken on the huge task
of looking at the entire Bible and putting it all into one big context.
He is doing a great job on this sermon series and
that's a huge task!

contour drawing challenge: day 2

Today I added a little
colored pencil to my contour drawing.

And Abby's drawing

It's a busy day today, so we did these in a hurry.
I'm glad we spent even a little time on it though.
I can feel my drawing skills getting better already :)

contour drawing challenge: day 1

Last week I was inspired to do a
30 day challenge where I do a simple
contour drawing each week day for four weeks.
It started today and I'm pleased to tell you
that my sweet daughter Abby is joining me in the challenge.

Here's my drawing for the day

And here are some pics of Abby's drawing

It's so fun to do this together!  And, with
two people in the same house doing it we are less likely
to forget a day.

Feel free to join Abby and I in this little drawing challenge.
See you back here tomorrow!

sunday doodoles

I really liked playing with my
white pen on this page.
I used a white
It's one of my favs!
It was also fun to add some flowers with some
sparkly paint - although it's hard to see the shimmer in this photo.

challenge

A friend of mine, Emily, has challenged herself to do something new
for a month and blog about it.  This got me thinking that I
should challenge myself to do something new for a month and share
it here.
Backstory/Confession: I am a horrible drawer.
It is a constant frustration of mine that I have never given much time
to developing my drawing skills.  So, I have decided
to do a simple contour drawing each weekday
for the next 4 weeks, starting on Monday.
I decided a contour drawing would be realistic and not very intimidating.
They aren't supposed to look that great to begin with, so
hopefully I won't psych myself out.

I did a quick one yesterday to test the waters.
Then I thought it would look cool if I added a little watercolor.

Would you like to join me in this little creative challenge?
Feel free to post pics/links in the comments section
and we can inch our way to being more disciplined with drawing together.

envelope love

I am part on an annual envelope
exchange through Letters of Joy in Seattle, WA.
Last week I received an envelope from
the very talented
Maude May of Seattle.

I love the fall theme of
Maude's envelope and the wonderful enclosure she included.
The colors even match the colors in the stamp!

I will work on my envelopes for the exchange
after the first of the year.  I will be sure to post my creations
before I send them.

Thanks a lot to Maude for spreading some Fall
cheer my way.  I love it!!

at church.

They have been so fun for me to do
and to share with you!

donation

A few weeks ago a friend of mine asked if I would
be interested in donating a piece of art to Christ Kitchen, a local
charity that provides job training for women
in need in our community.
I happily accepted her request and got to work on this piece.

There will be a fundraising luncheon on
October 29, where this will be shown.
The theme for the event is "Living Water" taken from
the story of the woman at the well in the book of John.

The best part for me is knowing that this piece has already been sold!
I posted a picture of it on Facebook and a friend
from high school liked it and is purchasing it before the event.
It feels good to contribute to an effective
and needed ministry.

This piece completed using Rives paper,
walnut ink and red Calli ink.

ink

My friend Emily asked me to design a
tattoo for her, so I happily obliged!

She had them done with dark brown ink
and they are on the inside of her arm
just below her elbow.
I love them.
Thanks Emily!!

Sorry the photo quality is especially bad with these.
I took them on my phone :)

How Great Thou Art

I was recently asked to letter a few verses
from the hymn How Great Thou Art.
While I was researching the hymn
I learned that the original text was
written in Swedish.
I decided to use the Swedish words as texture in the
background.  That's the light white lettering.

Then to add balance I added
the red and black cross.

Artwork completed using Dr. Martin's bleedproof white,
Sumi ink and red gouache on Canson Paper.

Good morning.

I added some strips of color to
this page before I headed to church.
Have a great Sunday!

a new direction

I have decided to go in a bit of a new direction
with my artwork lately.
So, I have some new card designs that I have been working on.

The lettering is different from what I have done
on cards before,
and the colors get lighter as they go down the
page.

I loved playing with these
and coming up with the new "ombre" design.

And, I can't wait to start sending them
to my friends and family.

sunday doodles

I'm back from a super long break from blogging.
Sorry for the silence.
I will post about our amazing summer in the coming weeks,
but for now I will start with some
of my church doodles.

I'm going in a slightly different direction
with my church sketchbook.
It was inspired by the class I took at
taught by Sharon Zeugin.
I will share much more about that later!

Maybe I should take a photography class next...hee hee.

I am sad to see this series come
to an end.
It has been enlightening
and fun to take notes on :)

envelope

I received another envelope from
the decorated envelope exchange I participated in
through Letters of Joy last year.

This one is from the very talented
Terri Kruger.

I love the lettering and the
wonderful illustration!!

And, although I did not attend Letters of Joy this year,
I did sign up for the envelope exchange again.
I have loved getting all these little works of art in the mail.
And the best part is I never know when they
are coming, so it's a great surprise waiting for me in my mailbox!
